Surround Sound Installation Tips For Your Home Theater

With the increasing popularity of HDTV, watching a DVD movie at home is a great entertainment experience. The picture is sharp, clear, and vibrant. But what about the sound? After all, that is one of the real attractions of going to a movie theater, the wraparound sound that lets you hear every detail. So is there a way to bring that kind of audio into our homes too? Absolutely!

Actually surround sound has been around for a while now in one form or another, but it just never had a platform to bring it into the mainstream before HDTV and digital media like the DVD became so prevalent. But now by combining the right equipment, a person can actually very closely simulate the movie theater experience right in the comfort of their home whenever they want.

For surround sound, you will need three things, (1) a digital source that has surround sound already encoded into it such as a DVD or a HDTV broadcast, (2) equipment to decode that surround sound signal, and (3) at least 6 speakers including a subwoofer to take full advantage of the most popular 5.1 surround sound format. It’s called 5.1 because it use 5 channels of sound to drive 5 separate speakers, and the .1 stands for the low-frequency subwoofer.

Once you have the equipment you need to establish a surround sound setup that will be right for your home. Much of the seating area will be determined by the size and type of TV that you have. If it is a 40″ HDTV, which is a very common size, you can probably sit about 5-8 feet away and not notice any degradation in the picture quality. Just experiment with the seating distance until it seems comfortable though. Then the two front speakers usually flank the TV, but make sure that they are wide enough to form a triangle with the seating area so everyone will be in the sound sweet spot.

The two back speakers are often placed somewhere around the seating area and faced either to a side or rear wall. The middle speaker needs to be situated somewhere close to the TV, and the subwoofer can be put anywhere in the room that you like, since it puts out such low frequency bass that seems to come from everywhere.

Every room has different listening characteristics though due to it’s configuration and furnishings, so feel free to experiment around until you find the combination that works best for you. A surround sound installation may seem challenging, but it’s just simply getting the right equipment and placing the speakers where they produce the best overall sound.

The 1080 HDTV Debate - 1080i vs 1080p

With the recent price drops in 1080p flat panel televisions its time to return to this classic battle. 1080i vs. 1080p. Is 1080p finally worth the extra price? The short answer is ‘Yes’.

Only a few months ago that wasn’t possible to say. The difficulty in creating 42 inch and larger panels forced the manufacturers to pass the cost of piles of discarded panels on to the public. Ahhhh,… but the beauty of technology is that there will always be those willing to bear the pain of high prices to have the latest and greatest.

While the public waited for flat TV’s the geeks had 7″ to 12″ panels in their laptops and were eager to pay for each size and quality upgrade. God bless the geeks (Now if only they could help me with my girlfriend but everyone knows that geeks are ‘Romantically Challenged’).

The ‘i’ or ‘p’ following the 1080 indicates the manner in which the picture will be displayed. ‘i’ stands for interlaced and it means that the panel displays every *other* line (1,3,5..) then makes a second pass to fill in the picture (2,4,6..).

The only thing that makes this trick possible is a quality of human vision called “persistence of vision”. Know how you can cut a light or TV off in a dark room and still see a fading afterglow from the light? that’s the effect.

Your eyes see lines 1,3,5 and they stay in your vision as the TV draws lines 2,4,6. very slick huh? 1080i allows a signal to be broadcast with only 50% of the information in each frame. Of course 1080p (progressive) is the exact opposite. It draws the screen from the top down 1,2,3,4.. just as you would expect.

The result is a picture that appears more solid and exact with no subtle flickering. depending on the source of the video signal the quality can be clearly seen. But is it worth the extra price?

Looking at the current market I have to say: Depends on where you buy it from.

That seems to be the largest variable in the price premium for 1080p over 1080i. Most in store salesmen realize that 1080p video quality can easily convince a buyer to pay a larger premium in-store. How could it not? Your dream TV is in your face in 1080p High-Definition. What’s not to love?

Online the market is more competitive and the price difference between 1080i and 1080p versions is much smaller but there are some very serious things to take into consideration before making such a huge purchase online. This is a little more serious than buying sneakers from eBay.

1) The Vendor - Can you trust that the vendor will actually deliver? HD Panels cost many thousands of dollars. Your card will be charged. Will you get the unit? Only deal with vendors with a proven track record of positive customer service. Research the vendor and read delivery reviews. A lot of good reviews that basically state how people feel about the TV are best because it verifies that the company delivers.

2) Are Warranties Available? - Please don’t buy a flat panel without buying a service warranty. The On-Site services that repair or replace the panel are the best. Don’t be cheap here. You’re spending thousands on the panel not spending a few hundred on sleep-at-night insurance would be foolish?

3) Is the HDTV In-Stock? - Many websites will instantly slap a picture of the hot HDTV on their website and happily take orders for items that may be backordered for months. Be wary of websites that don’t display in-stock status.

4) Check Delivery Options - Just because the store has the HD panel in stock is no guarantee that you’ll be able to watch the big game this weekend. Depending on the size of the HDTV delivery can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Most units 42″ and under can be shipped by FedEx or UPS but larger units usually require truck delivery.

Ask where the final point of delivery is. Some will only ship to your curb. Which means you’ll be responsible for moving an oversized item of several hundred pounds into your home. Standard options are curbside (cheapest if you have a dolly and a few buddies), to your door, into a room of your choosing with or without setup and box removal. Full setup is often referred to as white glove service and is usually worth the cost if you must install the HD panel yourself.

So in summary - Yes! 1080p is worth the extra resolution - The pictures clarity and stability is worth the smaller price markup over 1080i when buying at internet vendors. Making such a large purchase online does have risks but if you follow these basic simple tips you can avoid the most common mistakes made by HD online buyers and enter the world of glorious 1080p goodness - Just like I did.

Enjoy! Now where did I put that remote?

Top 5 HDTV’s For 2010

If you haven’t bought a new TV set for a good 4 or 5 years, then 2010 is the year to do so. The future of TV sets is about improved quality, slimness and 3D capability. CES 2010 in Las Vegas came to an end on the 10th of January. After taking a close look at the HDTVs on display, we’ve outlined the trends predicted for 2010 and shortlisted this year’s most exciting launches.

After a year of speculation, top TV manufacturers confirmed that 2010 will be the year of 3D television - with manufacturers like LG, Sony, Samsung and Toshiba announcing that 3D TV sets will be on sale in the UK by April. With Sky announcing that 3D broadcasting will be available by October, we strongly recommend that if you are planning on investing in a new HDTV set, go for a 3D one.

OLED is also set to be the next big thing in picture quality. The only problem is that manufacturers like LG can only make OLED TV as big as 15 inches; however we expect to see bigger sets over the next few years as the technology inevitably advances. OLED (which stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode) produces super crisp pictures with unbelievable quality and definition.

So, that’s enough small talk. Let’s get down to our list of best HDTV’s set to hit the shops in 2010…

LG Infinia LE9500 3D-Ready LED TV

For those who were lucky enough to be at this year’s CES will testify that LG’s 6.9mm model is the world’s thinnest LED TV. LG’s Infinia LE9500 3D-Ready LED TV comes equipped with an arsenal of innovations that includes 3D-Ready support, Skype capabilities and streaming media from Netflix, VUDU, YouTube, Napster and Yahoo! Widgets.. With this model, LG have broken conventions of LED TV design by transforming the screen into the actual speakers - which allows it to be so thin without compromising sound quality.

Toshiba Cell TVs

Besides using the same type of processor used in the PlayStation 3 and offering native 3D capability, Toshiba has packed its next generation of HDTVs with every feature we ever dreamed of. Toshiba also claims that, thanks to a new technology called TriVector Cell, TV series will be able to convert 2D content into 3D content in real time. No demo was available so we’ll have to hold off our judgement for now.

Samsung LED 9000 Series

The 900 series is the next gen of Samsung’s LED LCD TVs and the flagship model the Samsung C9000 is perhaps one of the slickest TV sets we’ve ever set eyes on. Just so you can comprehend the C900’s sleekness: the model is the same width as a number two pencil. The Samsung C900 is of course 3D, and is also capable of converting 2D content into 3D, again no demo was available.

LG 15-inch OLED TV

Despite its size, the LG 15-inch OLED TV is the biggest possible OLED TV to date, but give a few more years and we’ll see 26, 36, 47-inch OLED TV sets. OLED is the future of HDTV, this LG OLED produces super crisp picture with and absolutely stunning picture quality.

Sony 3D Bravia TV

As expected, Sony also caught the 3D flu that contaminated the world’s top television manufacturers and also introduced a new series of 3D TVs at this year’s CES. Sony will offer three separate lines of 3D Bravia HDTVs. The LX900 series, due out this summer, is available in size up to 60 inches and includes an edge-lit LED backlight system. Other features include 240Hz processing, integrated WiFi and two active shutter glasses for watching 3D content. It features what Sony calls a Monolithic industrial design with a smooth glass surface from edge to edge.

The consumer electronics giant also used the 3D wave to introduce its first 3D-capable Blu-ray player with WiFi connectivity and instant streaming of online content.

What is a Nintendo Wii?

You gotta know what a Wii is by now, but just in case you crawled out from underneath your rock and you were wondering about this system in particular, I think I could probably help you out! See according to market researcher David Cole, who runs the firm DFC Intelligence, his best estimate is that 40 percent of U.S. households own a working video-game console. Michael Pachter, an analyst for Wedbush Morgan Securities, estimates that 52% of households own consoles. This is really saying something not only about Wiis but about gaming consoles and the consumers involvement with them.

If you have ever wondered why there are so many different systems out there, it’s because of stats like that above. Everyone wants one, consoles all offer different options and different games, and it’s because they can ALL afford to bring out a new system because they know we the consumers will eat it up. This is our bread butter. This is what we enjoy, sitting on the couch with controller in hand playing Tom Clancy at three am or beating up some guy in the boxing game on Wii with our handy remote! This is what we want!

The Wii is a video game console released by Nintendo, this console primarily competes with Xbox and Sony PlayStation 3. Nintendo states this console targets a broader demographic in that it does. The financial Times reported that as of September 12, 2007 its sales has been the leader of its generation. One of the named features of this console in particular is its wireless controller also called a remote which can be used in a handheld pointing device and detect movement in three dimensions. This console is the fifth one developed by Nintendo and is a direct successor of the Nintendo GameCube. As of September 30 2008 over 34.55 million units have been shipped to North America, South America, Japan, and other regions. One would think that Japan would have been this unit ships, however, Japan is only at 6.91 million whereas South America and North America are at 15.19 million. This is absolutely amazing!

The first really popular game was that of the sports edition which included things like golf, tennis, and my personal favorite; boxing. It’s really amazing when you think about how innovative the Wii has become and yet how popular it still stands even more than a year later. These systems can sell for up to thousands of dollars on sites like eBay and Amazon, and are one of the most sought after systems ever before. That’s really saying something considering the amount of various systems out there nowadays, between Sony, and Microsoft and all those other big names. But really it shouldn’t be that surprising consider after Atari the next real gaming console was that of the original Nintendo which was something that every kid around the country wanted; and most of us got. Since then those of us who had Nintendo, have most likely been addicted to all the other Nintendo’s as well, so why not add Wii to the collection?!?

If you are looking for something different, something innovative, and something that will get you up off your couch and really get your heart and your mind into gear, you seriously need to check out the Nintendo Wii, I seriously doubt you will be disappointed, I know I wasn’t!

New Technology Provides Alternatives To HDTV DVD’s

A lot of people are hesitant to make an investment in high definition DVD technology and for good reason. Any new technology needs some time to be debugged so that it can function smoothly and deliver the performance that mainstream consumers expect, but since HDTV DVD technology has been out for over a year, that shouldn’t really be a concern. The thing that is a concern for many consumers though is that there are two formats of high def DVD’s that can’t be played with each other’s players. This hearkens back to the days when VHS and Betamax were dueling for supremacy over the video cassette market. When the dust settled after that format war, many people were left with useless Betamax players an no source of new video cassettes to play on them. Now there’s widespread fear that the same could happen to anyone who invests in the high def DVD format that doesn’t win the present format war.

There are some things that consumers can do in order to enjoy many of the benefits of HDTV movies without actually buying a Blu-ray player or an HD-DVD player. The most cost effective thing to do would probably be to buy an upconverting DVD player. This device plays standard definition DVD’s and upconverts the video that comes from them so that it resembles HDTV resolutions. While an upconverted picture isn’t as good as a real HDTV picture, it’s significantly better than standard definition. This will also provide a way for you to breath new life into older DVD’s.

Another option is to download movies in HDTV format. This can be accomplished through Microsoft’s Xbox 360, the Apple TV, and several other devices. While the option of downloading High Def movies does circumvent having to use high def DVD’s, it’s not without its problems. In the case of the Apple TV, it can only get movies from iTunes, it only handles video with a resolution of up to 720p, and the picture that it produces at that resolution is quite grainy. The Xbox 360 doesn’t really have problems with the quality of the picture, but the downloads can take extremely long times- sometimes upwards of an hour.

Another option comes in the form of the Vudu. The Vudu is a set top box that downloads video from the Internet and then upconverts the video to HDTV resolutions before displaying it on your TV. While this does eliminate the need for any kind of DVD, like upconverting DVD players, it produces a picture that’s less than ideal because of the upconversion.

Another option still, is to get a high def DVD player that’s part of another devices that you want anyway. For example, if you want the latest version of Sony’s Play Station video game system, you’ll get the built in Blu-ray disc player. In fact, there’s no way not to get a Blu-ray disc player. If you already have Microsoft’s Xbox 360, you can get an optional drive that will play HD-DVD’s. If you want the video game system anyway, either of these two alternatives will probably cost you less than getting the video gaming system and a stand alone high def DVD player.

Whatever you decide, hopefully it should be helpful to know that there are alternatives to investing directly in high def DVD technology before you’re ready.

Psp Game Torrent Downloads - Are They Good?

The Sony Play Station Portable (PSP) has encouraged avid gamers to find ways to save up on money by downloading PSP game iso’s, instead of buying the PSP game titles. One way these games are distributed is through PSP game torrents on torrent sites. But are the games that come from these torrent sites any good compared to other websites that provide access to their database of PSP games?

There are three things to consider here. First, cost. Are the torrent files available for free download? Second, is the download speed fast? Third, is the game selection wider than other websites that allow direct download? Fourth, what about spyware and adware? Fifth, what about corrupt files?

One of the more popular torrent protocols used is BitTorrent, and this protocol is much better than peer-to-peer transfer of files because it’s faster. BitTorrent enables fast downloads of huge files, including PSP game torrent files, using only minimum Internet bandwidth. It costs nothing to use, has no spyware or popup advertising. You can download and install an assortment of BitTorrent clients to use, all of them for free.

BitTorrent increases transfer speeds by gathering bits of the file you wanted and downloads them, the pieces, all at the same time from numerous PC’s owned by people who already have the file you want. This makes downloads of PSP game torrents, among other things, very fast.

Websites like Mininova and Meganova are torrent sites that offer free access to their database of torrents on numerous files, from movies to games to whatever.

So, to answer the five questions. First, yes, the torrent files are free for download so long as you have installed the equally free BitTorrent client. Compared to commercial websites that offer PSP downloads, access to torrent websites costs nothing. Second, yes, the download speed is usually fast. Third, the game selection is affected by how many torrent files are made available be participating people who serve as seeds, or download sources. This means you should keep searching for torrent sites where they have more PSP games. Forth, usually no spyware or adware. When the download is finished, you can usually virus-scan the downloaded file for malware, before running the file. Fifth, as for bad or corrupt files, you can always check the comment thread on the file you are to download for responses and comments. Some of them will point out if the file is corrupt, or incomplete, or if a better one is up in another torrent somewhere.

There you go, a comparison of PSP game torrents compared to websites that offer download of PSP stuff. Hope this helps.
